Embracing the Journey: From Psychologist to Photographer
Transitioning into a new career is both exhilarating and daunting. Moving from my established role as a psychologist to the uncharted territory of photography has brought back memories of grad school—the uncertainty, the stress, and the fear of the unknown.
In grad school, I often felt lost, doubting my abilities and questioning my career path. I faced constant scrutiny and felt like I was always falling short. It was a challenging time, filled with imposter syndrome and self-doubt. But over the years, I grew into my role, gaining confidence and expertise. Today, I feel comfortable teaching students and trainees, sharing my knowledge, and embracing my identity as a psychologist.
Yet, as I embark on this new journey into photography, those old feelings of uncertainty have resurfaced. I’m reminded of the early days when I didn’t know what I was doing and felt out of my depth. Imposter syndrome creeps in, making me question my decision and abilities. But I remind myself of the lessons learned from my journey as a psychologist.
Accepting uncertainty is a crucial part of this process. The fear of the unknown, the fear of failure, and even the fear of success are all normal. Transitioning to a new career doesn’t mean I’m a failure or incompetent. It’s an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to redefine my path. I have to celebrate the small victories and view setbacks as chances to improve.
Maintaining a willingness to be a student again is essential. There’s so much to learn in photography, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But I know that growth comes from pushing through discomfort and embracing the learning process. I must stay open, avoid defensiveness, and not give up when faced with how much there is still to learn.
This journey isn’t just about finding a new career; it’s about evolving as a person. It’s about recognizing that my worth isn’t tied to one role or identity. The skills and experiences I’ve gained as a psychologist are invaluable, and they shape my approach to photography in unique ways.
I share this not to preach, but to offer encouragement. If you’re facing a career change or pursuing a new passion, know that you’re not alone. Embrace the journey with all its challenges and uncertainties. Take those chances. Be willing to try, to fail, and to succeed.
Remember, every step forward is progress. Celebrate your efforts, learn from your experiences, and continue to grow. Your journey is your own, and it’s okay to redefine what success looks like.
Here’s to embracing the unknown and finding joy in the journey.
