Favorite Fall Photoshoot Locations in Central VA

Fall in central Virginia is truly a sight to behold, especially here in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The vibrant colors, the crisp air, and the golden light that graces the mornings and evenings make it one of the most magical times of the year. And as a photographer, I’m always on the lookout for those perfect spots that showcase the beauty of the season while capturing the warmth and connection of your family.

While we can create magic anywhere—even in your backyard, your cozy family home, or the charming downtown mall—there’s something particularly special about being surrounded by nature during this season. So, here are a few of my favorite nature-inspired locations for fall photos that never disappoint.

1. Boar’s Head Resort:

Boar’s Head is an absolute gem with its manicured lawns, a serene lake, and that golden light that bathes everything in a warm glow. Whether we shoot in the morning or evening, this location offers a magical setting where your family can relax and just be yourselves. The variety of backdrops here means we can capture a wide range of moods, from playful to serene.

2. UVA Campus and Gardens:

The University of Virginia campus is nothing short of iconic, especially in the fall. There are endless nooks and crannies filled with vibrant foliage, historic architecture, and that perfect soft light. It’s a spot where every corner tells a

story, making it an ideal place for capturing the beauty of your family in a timeless setting.

3. Ivy Creek Natural Area:

Ivy Creek might just be my all-time favorite. It offers everything from grassy fields to wooded trails and tall grassy meadows. The wide-open lawns are perfect for little ones who need to run off some energy, and the variety of landscapes means we can capture both intimate family moments and playful candid shots. It’s a spot where the beauty of nature truly shines through in every photo.

4. The Market at Grelen:

If you’re looking for a location that has it all—gardens, mountain views, and that glorious fall light—The Market at Grelen is the place. It’s a dreamy setting for photos, with its stunning views and beautifully maintained gardens. Just keep in mind that it’s also a popular wedding venue, so we may need to plan our session around their schedule.

5. James Monroe’s Highland:

James Monroe’s Highland is a location that’s close to my heart. The golden light here is absolutely stunning, especially in the mornings. The site opens at 9:30 am, and the combination of fall foliage and historical charm creates a backdrop that’s as beautiful as it is unique. It’s a place where history and nature come together to create something truly special.

Of course, this is just a small selection of my favorite spots. Central Virginia is full of hidden gems, and I’m always excited to discover new locations that perfectly suit your family’s vibe. When we work together, we’ll consult to pick the location that feels just right for you, whether it’s one of these nature spots or somewhere else that holds a special meaning for your family.

Fall is fleeting, but the memories we capture together will last a lifetime. So let’s embrace this beautiful season and create some magic together in a place that feels just right for you and your family. Whether it’s a wide-open field, a historic garden, or the comfort of your own home, I’m here to make sure your photos reflect the warmth, connection, and joy that make your family unique.
