What Kind of Location Should I Choose for my Photoshoot?

There are a number of variables that go into choosing a location for your photo shoot. Most photographers will have a handful of locations they prefer to use for sessions, depending on their style. These are frequently chosen due to familiarity, beauty of the scene, and ease of access.

So what should you choose?

1. Urban area:

I love doing sessions in a more urban area or part of town. There tends to be so much color and textures, unique settings, and different types of people. All of it comes together to create a really unique and interesting locale for pictures. In my experience, many couples or those looking for branding and headshots love urban areas for the variety you can get. The weather also tends to have less of an impact as well, since we can easily duck inside a store, coffee shop, etc to take photos. There are a few cons though when looking to photograph in this type of setting. First, it is harder to manage the sheer number of people bustling around. It can be very difficult (but not impossible) to take group or more posed pictures without being interrupted. Second, it can be really difficult to corral young kids, especially when they start to get restless and wiggly when things become more active downtown or other urban locales. Plus, keeping kids clothes clean is a lesson in futility, especially if you are looking for sitting or laying down poses. Ain’t gonna happen. Third, depending on where pictures are happening, finding parking (especially if you need to drive in for the session), can be time consuming and require some research a head of time. I know I just gave a bunch of cons to doing more urban session, but these are truly some of my favorite locations and really provide a wonderful backdrop for most people.

2. In-Home:

In-home sessions are truly wonderful when you are looking for something more intimate, relaxed, and low-key. Children tend to relax more at home and show their personalities a lot faster. In-home sessions are great for families, newborns, couples, etc. And I really cannot think of many cons to this type of setting, with one caveat. In-home sessions tend to occur mid-morning (around 10 am), since this is when homes get the best light. It is not uncommon for families to ask to move outdoors for photos to their backyard. This is completely do-able, but sunlight around this time is more harsh and is not the best for photos. So if you want that pretty golden light, an in-home session is probably not your best bet.

3. Mountains:

I have come to love Charlottesville and surrounding areas, and I truly do believe it is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Shenandoah national park and Blue Ridge mountains are striking, verdant, and just downright gorgeous, and they provide a gorgeous backdrop for pictures. If you love to hike and be outdoors, this might be your best bet. However, there are a few cons to this type of setting. While driving to the mountain base is easy enough, the best views for pictures often requires a bit of a hike to get there. Granted, It is not impossible, but these hikes can be very difficult for young kids, pregnant women, etc. so I find it is best to consider who will be with you and if they are able to manage this type of walk. Plus, the weather may be a barrier to using this type of location. That being said, many say the views are worth

4. In-Home:

5. Forest or meadow:

these tend to be my go-to for family, maternity, or couples sessions. Lighting is great and can be easily timed for golden hour. There tends to be a little less traffic, so getting a group shot is a little easier. This extra space is boon with kids as well, since they can play and run around when they become too restless or jittery. Plus, it provides a great backdrop for families to play and interact with each other. That being said, they have a few drawbacks. First, it can be a bit of drive to get to certain locales. Most of the locations I choose are close to town and relatively easy to get to, but this may not always be the case. Second, we have to be aware of any recent rain or storms since they can become muddy, making it difficult to maneuver around. This is not frequent, but in the rainy season it is something we need to be aware of when planning.

6. University:

if you don’t know, I live near the University of Virginia, which has one of the most beautiful campuses, in my opinion. Sessions here are beautiful and often hold a special place for people when they choose to have a session here. The campus is old, timeless, and beautiful with its gardens and old brick buildings. I love having sessions here. However, a few things to consider first. Parking on or near campus can be a pain, and you may need to walk a ways after finding a parking spot. Also, it is easy to be turned around if you are not familiar with the campus and trying to find your way around for the first time.
